Try it right now! Start typing your channel’s niche or topic of interest in YouTube’s search bar. It will begin to show you searches related to that query.

Those are actual things humans are typing in the search bar to find YouTube videos, and because of that, they are proven topics.

#Bonus Tip: put extra spaces after your search terms to go deeper and find more video ideas. Let’s see an example: say we have a channel in the social media niche. We want to make a video about methods to grow an Instagram account. We can start typing ‘how to get Instagram followers’ and see what YouTube suggests to us:

Based on these results, we can assume that people are interested to know how to get Instagram followers ‘for free’, ‘fast’, ‘in 2021’, and also ‘how to get likes’.

All of those ideas appear from a simple search. Repeat this method with other topics related to your niche and see what you found.

Trending Channels And Videos

Another never-ending source of inspiration are channels and videos from other creators.

Search topics that are relevant to your niche and look at the videos and channels that pop up.

Those channels and videos are probably being watched by your subscribers as well, and it can’t hurt you to browse popular content in your niche to see if your channel is missing out on something.

When you find a popular channel in your niche, go to their videos and sort them by their most popular uploads. What are the videos with more views, and why?

Continuing with our example from before, in the social media niche, a popular one is Vanessa Lau’s channel. For our search ‘how to get Instagram followers’, one of her videos pops up. When we go to her channel and sort her videos to see the most popular ones, this is what we found:

Almost all her most popular videos are about Instagram. You can see clearly what are the most searched topics: how to gain Instagram followers, how to get the swipe-up feature, how to get more likes, how to grow an account from scratch, how to write an Instagram bio, etc.

That tells us what people in this niche are interested in.

Obviously, we don’t recommend you to copy another channel’s videos, but it can be a good exercise to find new topics if you’re stuck.

Make videos including keywords with a green Overall Score to have better chances to rank.

In the ‘Related Searches’ section, you can explore more keyword ideas. Click on each one to analyze them individually and make an informed decision on which ones to target.

Above that section, you will find four tabs. ‘YouTube’ and ‘Google’ show you how the interest in that keyword has changed over time.

On the other end, ‘Video Topics’ and ‘Common Tags’ provide you with even more keyword ideas to make videos about.

VidIQ

This is another YouTube-specific tool that also offers several features to improve your chances of success in YouTube.

VidIQ is a powerful ally to research keywords related to your channel’s niche. Once you have an account, you can find the Keyword Research Tool on the ‘Keywords’ tab.

VidIQ gives you an ‘Overall Score’, the same as TubeBuddy, that tells you if it’s viable to target that keyword and rank for it.

Remember that a high Overall Score reflects low competition and high search volume, the best combination for ranking videos on YouTube. Anything over 40 is good.

In summary, the closer the Overall Score number is to 100, the higher the possibility to get views and rank for these key phrases.

Therefore, VidIQ not only gives you keyword ideas but also supplies the data to choose between the best.

The tool also shows you trending videos for the keywords you research, which gives you even more video ideas.

Another useful feature is the ‘Trending’ tab you can find every time you visit a YouTube channel. It shows you the videos on that channel with the highest views per hour.

Next to ‘Trending’ is the ‘Stats’ tab, where you can see useful statistics about your competitor’s channels.

In this example, some videos were uploaded years ago, while others were uploaded months or even days ago.

The older and more viewed videos on this channel cover ‘how to get more views on YouTube’ and ‘YouTube SEO’, and are 3 and 4 years old, respectively.

What do older videos with higher views per hour tell you? Basically, that those videos are ranking well and discuss a topic that many people search for, even after years.

And people tend to prefer up-to-date videos, so they might favor a newer video over another that’s multiple years old (here’s an opportunity for you to take advantage of!).

By studying your competitors in this way, you can make a related, newer video on a proven topic you know people are actually searching for.

Although VidIQ’s features are pretty limited in the free version, it’s a nice tool to try.

Note that sometimes the results from VidIQ and TubeBuddy can differ a little bit (as with every SEO tool). It’s a good practice to run your ideas on multiple tools to make sure you are targeting the right keywords.

Answer The Public

Answer The Public is a platform that allows you to examine questions people make about topics related to your niche.

Besides giving you video ideas and related keywords, this tool can help you to outline your videos.

Introduce your niche or a related topic in the search bar. It will give you a graphic with questions related to those keywords, that will look something like this:

If we made a video on that topic, the outline can come naturally from these questions.

This will ensure our script cover topics people are interested in, and they will find our video very valuable and relevant if we answer what they need.

Below ‘Questions’, you also have graphics with ‘Prepositions’ and ‘Comparisons’ that come from the keywords you entered on the search bar earlier. On the bottom, you also have a section with related keywords to find even more content ideas.

Google Keyword Planner

Google’s Keyword Planner is a keyword research tool (completely free to use) built into Google’s advertising system. To use it, first you need to have a Google Ads account.

Once you have it, log in. You can find Keyword Planner on the dashboard:

Similar to the tools we used earlier, Google shows you ‘Average Monthly Searches’ and ‘Competition’ data for the keywords you entered on the search bar, and for the additional related keywords.

Try to aim for keywords with at least 5,000-10,000 searches per month.

But it depends on the niche as well, so as a general rule, stick to keywords with low competition and high search volume.

You can sort the table of related keywords that Keyword Planner shows you by clicking on ‘Avg. Monthly Searches’ or on ‘Competition.

Here we sort it by Avg. Monthly Searches to view keywords with the highest search volume first:

This tool can help you not only to find new video ideas but also to validate your keywords by knowing if they are worth pursuing or not. This data comes from Google, not from YouTube. But many views on YouTube videos come from Google searches, and YouTube is owned by Google anyways.

Extra SEO tools

By now, you surely recognize this post’s main point: to find content ideas and proven topics (those that can get you the views required to exponentially grow your channel) it’s necessary to research first.

Basically, keyword research helps you to make videos that people will be searching for, without guessing involved.

There are many, many keyword research tools out there.

Some are completely free, like Keyword Tool.

What Are Watch Hours on YouTube? 

Simply put, watch hours are the number of hours people spend watching your content. 

To monetize your channel you need to have at least 4,000 watch hours and 1,000 subscribers, as we said early. 

Here we are going to focus solely on raising watch hours, assuming that if you increase your watch hours, your subscriber count will naturally grow as well. 

What Are Public Watch Hours on YouTube? 

When we say that you need to reach a minimum 4,000 watch hours threshold to monetize your channel, we mean 4,000 public watch hours.

But what does it mean? 

It means that your watch hours must come from public videos. 

Thus, if you publish a video and you later set it to private, the watch hours on that video will not count. 

Furthermore, you can’t make a livestream and then set it as unlisted, because again, those watch hours will not count. 

The Math Behind Monetization Requirements 

Let’s explore exactly what will take to monetize your YouTube channel. 

Average view duration is a metric that measures the amount of time watched from a video before people begin to leave. 

Why is that important? 

Because it tells you exactly which videos your audience likes (which videos they spend time seeing and want to see more of). If you focus on making more videos that they like (relevant, engaging content for your specific niche) your average view duration will rise and so will your watch hours.

(Side note: I recommend your videos to be around 8-12 minutes. That’s because after 8 minutes, you can show an ad mid-roll and that means more potential money). Stick with me here: so you need 1,000 subscribers AND 4,000 watch hours (240,000 minutes) to monetize your YouTube channel. 

Assuming an average 1% conversion rate, you will get 1,000 subscribers every 100,000 views

And assuming a 30-50% retention rate (less than the average 50-60%) in a video that’s about 8-12 minutes long, you will have a 3-4 minute average view duration

So, you need 100,000 people to view around 3 min of your videos to reach 300,000 minutes of watch time, surpassing your 4,000 watch hours threshold. 

And assuming the 1% conversion rate defined above, that 100,000 views will make 1,000 subscribers. But the views you get are extremely low at the beginning. 

The time it’s going to take you to met YouTube’s monetization requirements will depend on different factors, such as your channel’s niche, the quality of your videos, and the number of videos you publish on any given month. 

It can take you from 2 months to a year+ of consistent publishing to reach monetization requirements and join the Youtube Partner Program…

How to Get YouTube Watch Hours 

As a general rule, if you are in a not-so-boring niche and if you publish consistently a ton of very high-quality videos, your channel will grow pretty fast. 

It all comes down to your ability to keep people watching your content.

There are five main metrics across all of your channels to track closely: acquisition, activation, retention, referral, and revenue. These metrics are the pillar of your business growth and will help you to know and better understand your customers and their buyer’s journeys.

Check all of these areas to identify problems with your content or your approach to content creation. Where can you improve?

  • Acquisition: What channels bring you new users? Are you making the most out of them?
  • Activation: This is the first contact of the customers with your product. How many people have a good experience? Why do bad experiences happen?
  • Retention: Do your customers come back? What percentage of them are you retaining and how many are you losing (and why)?
  • Referral: Are customers recommending your brand to friends and family? How can you create more brand advocates?
  • Revenue: What is the monetization model of your product? How can you increase revenue?

If you detect problems in the acquisition stage, for example, maybe you need to focus on fewer social media accounts to have a powerful presence on every profile you have, or maybe you need a team to help you.

This can sound a little bit of a cliche, but hear me out. It is very important to think about why you are creating content. It has to be more specific than “because every business is in social media”.

Choose your goals wisely

At this stage, you have identified different content marketing problems and possible solutions. Now it is time to translate those into goals.

Always keep in mind your general business goals, and create very specific content marketing goals. Define success, and think about how you can measure it.

For example, success in your business right now can mean building awareness of a new brand (this is a general business goal). In the content marketing strategy, we will formulate a SMART goal like this (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely):

“By Dec 31, 2021, attract 500 new organic visitors to the website from social media each month”.

Select and track your KPIs

What metrics do you want to track? Define them by thinking about which metrics can measure the success of your strategy. In the example above, an obvious metric to track will be traffic sources.

On the other hand, which tools will you use to measure these metrics? And how will you create reports to understand if the strategy is working or needs an adjustment?

Don’t forget to track your metrics at least once a month (and more often, if you can). Keep them in a spreadsheet to identify patterns over time and to find out if you are reaching your goals.

Understand your target audience

And I don’t mean this on a superficial level. As a general rule: the more you know about them, the more successful your content marketing strategy will be because you will know what type of content creates engagement.

Build your buyer personas. Define and describe the different segments of your audience in a comprehensive way.  Which problems do they face, and what solutions do they search for? Where do they hang out, and what content do they like to consume?

It is important to consider these questions and not only the demographic data (although the demographics are super important too!). Segment your audience according to their behavior.

Types of content

According to your content’s mission, which messages do you wish to convey, and what language, tone and style will you use? The content has to be aligned with your purpose and values, and this way you will portray a consistent brand image across all your channels.

Another step to keep a consistent brand image is to think about the design side of things. How your content looks and its format has to communicate your brand image as well.

On the other hand, check the competitors’ content. How can you differentiate yourself from them? Your USP (unique selling point) can help to position your brand’s content from a new angle, different and more interesting to your audience.

Now that you have thought about your audience and its needs, it will be easier to think about the content types that will resonate better with that audience. Which channels do they use to consume content? Make sure your brand is present in the main ones.

#Bonus tip: fill the gaps with your content. If your audience is trying to solve a specific problem, what content do they search for and can’t find? Create valuable resources.

Content calendar

A content calendar answers a very specific question: when are you going to publish, to whom, and about what?

Decide your publishing frequency, and look at your content ideas list to begin the planning stage. If you don’t have one, start it now! In a document, notes app, or team management app that synchronizes across devices, it is easy to quickly jot down any ideas that strike you through the day, don’t matter where you are!

To streamline the whole process, look for holidays and special occasions in the month you are working on. Is there a specific date that you can leverage to create content? Also, keep an eye on trending topics.

Plan first the main pieces of content, and then the follow-up days. Are you running a content series? Schedule it as well.

You can organize this information in a spreadsheet (there are many templates online!). Simply distribute your content ideas throughout the month. Then, assign and allocate resources to make it happen.

If you have a team, designate the tasks to different members, and if you are a solopreneur, assign different days in your schedule to create, publish and promote the content.

Keyword research

Especially if you run a blog, keyword research is crucial to reach your ideal audience, because you target the search terms they use to find valuable content.

Do keyword research beforehand and attach the keywords you discover to your content calendar to simplify even more your content creation process.

The publish and pray approach won’t get you very far. Think strategically about the places where you can promote your content. After all the hard work, you deserve to reach as many eyeballs as possible.

Selecting where to promote your content is a choice that has to be based on your target audience and where they hang out the most.

Social media is the first and most obvious choice. But with a little research, you can find influencers and key websites in your niche that get your content to a wider public.

Make a promotion checklist and be sure to complete it every time you publish a new piece of content.

Test, fix, and grow

The last step is an ongoing process. After every time you check the metrics to determine if the goals have been reached, you will have the opportunity to do more of what works, and less of what didn’t work.

If you have a significant drop or boost in your metrics, you can check what you published that day and see what caused it. On the other hand, remember that A/B testing is vital to understand what content resonates better with your audience. Always test and improve!

Planning and Organizing YouTube Videos: Step by Step Process

Brainstorm

To initiate the brainstorming session, open a new document or your notes app (pen and paper if you are the analogic type!) and begin to jot down some ideas.

If you struggle to come up with ideas, think of 3-5 main keywords that describe your channel. Then, think of video ideas for each one.

Remember to keep your eyes open to ideas to film video series!

You can also search popular videos or channels in your niche and see what they’re doing.

By studying your competitors you’ll know their weaknesses (as well as their strengths) and therefore, you’ll also figure out how to make better videos that rank higher!

Lastly, you’ll want to refine that giant list of ideas. Remove the ideas without potential, and also erase the repetitive or too similar ones.

#Bonus tip: It’s important for SEO purposes that you run your ideas somewhere (TubeBuddy is a great tool, Google Trends, and YouTube search suggestions are some free alternatives) and tweak keywords in the video ideas for better rankings. You’ll want, if possible, to target low competition, high search volume keywords!

After all that hard work, you have now a list with a decent number of future video ideas.

Believe me when I say that a list like this will help your channel (and your sanity!) tremendously.

Make sure to keep an eye on your videos’ comment section for suggestions that come straight up from your audience (that’ll also help you to know them better!)

Since your ideas have to be things that people actually look for or want to see, doing keyword research and knowing your audience are awesome tools to get the best chances of increasing views and attract eyeballs.

This list of ideas can become very big and confusing, so, extra points if you organize it in a spreadsheet in different categories!

Plan the upcoming month

Now that you’re equipped with a solid list of ideas, you can start to properly plan.

The way you choose to organize your content is totally personal, but I’ll explain to you a simple system that works like a charm.

I love tools like Asana or Trello to organize content for YouTube, because you can move and drag things around, reorganizing them with huge flexibility. I generally keep a few lists to organize the content creation process. These are the ones I use:

  • Video ideas
  • June (or whatever month)
  • Outline
  • Film
  • Edit
  • Completed

Once you create these lists, transfer your video ideas to the “video ideas” list. Drag some of these ideas to the month list, according to the videos you want to film in that specific month.

Next, you’ll drag those videos to the other lists as you complete each task. When you outline a video, you move it to the “outline” list; once you filmed it, you drag it on the “film” list, and so on.

You can replicate this process in different Word documents or even in a spreadsheet if not a great fan of the tools I mentioned.

This system allows you to see at a glance where you are in the creative process, what it’s left to do, and what your progress looks like.

You can plan from a few weeks to 6 months ahead, it depends on your style and flexibility needs!

Maintain a few videos ready to publish will ensure that you can still upload even if you’ve had a bad week and were not able to film. Work on that consistency!

Schedule your videos and create a content calendar

For this step, you can use a calendar tool like Google Calendar, or simply create a content calendar in a spreadsheet.

The idea is to schedule, firstly, the day you are going to publish each video idea that you have in the “month” list.

#Bonus tip: schedule the specific hour you want to upload as well. In YouTube Studio, you can see your audience’s analytics and find out the best days and hours to publish your content (based on their activity). Schedule to upload just before the peak time for maximum effect!

Use color coding at your advantage: make the film, edit and publish days a different color, to see at a glance which activities you have to do each week to reach your goals.

I recommend filming and editing in bulk to be more focused and productive. In one single day, you can film 2-3 videos, and then another day edit them before the upload date. Our brains respond so much better to a single activity, rather than the pressure of switching tasks way too frequently.

Outline and script your video

Did you know that outlines are vital to increasing your watch time and audience retention?

A good video structure will prevent you from simply turn on the camera and start talking. If you do that every time you film a video, you’re risking being repetitive, slow, and scattered.

Because let’s be real, people don’t have time to watch someone talk for 30 min about something that can be said in 8 min.

Having a script or a simple outline will make your filming and editing much more efficient.

If you are talking to the camera directly I don’t recommend a full script, because it will sound unnatural, like you’re reading.

But a simple outline to follow along (with the content divided into different headers and a few key points below each) will ensure you don’t lose track while talking, keeping it straight and to the point.

Follow these steps and your channel’s consistency will be on-point. You’ll also be less stressed about meeting your deadlines if you have a few videos ready to publish beforehand.

But how do we do that?

Well, it starts by knowing your viewers: if you know who’s watching you (a.k.a. your target audience) chances are that you’re going to know how to communicate with them in a way that’s appealing and persuasive.

A tip for the title: use [brackets] or (parentheses). Inside them, include a sneak peek of what the video contains, to make it super catchy.

To go a step further, analyze the titles of other videos on the topic you want to upload. Then, figure out a way to craft a title that’s more appealing and eye-catching.

Pay attention to your tags

With the new changes YouTube made to the algorithm in 2021, tags aren’t a super important part of SEO anymore. However, it continues to be a valuable ranking factor to consider.

These changes to the algorithm were made due to people abusing tags and stuffing their videos with them. Something very similar happened in one of Google’s algorithm update, where they become less focused on keywords and more focused on user search intention.

It’s a great idea to learn from this and make sure you are using tags correctly, without overdoing it.

I recommend that the first 2-3 tags are your main target keyword and a few variations of it.

For example:

  • linkbuilding strategies
  • linkbuilding guide
  • linkbuilding tutorial

The next 2-3 tags will be synonyms of that main keyword:

  • backlinks
  • backlinks technique

The last 2-3 tags will be broad categories that your target topic falls within. For example:

  • SEO
  • search ranking
  • web traffic

And that’s all you need! Choose your tags smartly if you can, analyzing the value of each one with a keyword research tool (we’ll talk about this below).

So, if a person is watching a video on the same topic that yours, it is a good idea to heighten the chances that your video appears in that person’s suggested section.

But how do you do that?

Well, a good tip is to find a few very popular videos on your exact topic if possible, and assess the keywords they use.

You can use some of the same. YouTube will know from these keywords that your video can pair well to expand on the topic of the popular videos you found before and will suggest yours to that audience.

Thus, you’ll have more chances of your channel showing in the recommended section!

Optimize the video description

I’m tired of seeing videos with a single-word description. Those days are over.

You need to write a good description (150+ words at the very least) that sound like you were talking to another fellow human. So, no keyword stuffing, please!

Instead, use your main keyword in the first 2-3 sentences. Next, you can sprinkle these and other related keywords into the body of the text.

Make sure your description is engaging and fun to read as well.

Bonus tip: find keywords with high potential

You’ll love this tip.

First, head to the analytics on YouTube Studio and click traffic sources > search.

There, you will see the keywords that people use to find your videos. Chances are that you’re aware of some of these keywords because you were using them intentionally to rank your videos.

But if you dig deep enough, you’ll find keywords that you rank for accidentally.

Since these keywords already bring people to your channel, why don’t use them to optimize your videos or to create new content targeting these keywords, capitalizing on them?

Like, “what of these strategies was your favorite? Tell us in a comment down below”.

People love to interact, but (generally) not to think. If they have to come up with a long well-thought answer, probably they don’t going to bother to comment. Makes sense, right?

Another great tip is to give people a reason to subscribe. A very popular way to doing this is telling something like “subscribe so you don’t miss on great future content like this!”
