Since millions of posts are uploaded to Instagram everyday, it is downright impossible for Instagram to be able to moderate and regulate what is being posted.
That’s exactly why Instagram has the option to report posts or accounts so people can report the account they think is violating Instagram’s community guidelines and then Instagram can review the report and take action if necessary.
The way reports work is when someone reports a post or an account, there is a list of reasons ranging from False News to Scams to Harassment.
Upon submitting the report, it takes Instagram 24 hours to review the report where it checks to see whether the post or the account is violating Instagram’s guidelines or not.
If Instagram finds the post or account to be violating its community Guidelines, the account is issued a warning.
The person who submitted the report is sent a notification either way, with Instagram’s reasoning as to why the account was issued a warning or if they found the post to be complying with the guidelines.

If an account is found to have a single post that was violating Instagram’s guidelines, the account is issued a warning and the post is deleted. Instagram issues a total of 3 warnings before it takes action and deletes an account.
But a single report wouldn’t be enough for Instagram to delete an account.
It takes about 3 – 4 reports from different accounts for Instagram to take action and delete an account.
So if you have multiple accounts, use them or get your friends to report the account as well.
The more reports, the higher the chances that the account will be deleted instead of being issued a warning.
If the account you wish to get deleted is pretending to be you or someone else, then one report is enough, given that you have the proof Instagram needs to verify your identity.
How do you report an Instagram account to get it deleted?
So now that we know why Instagram deletes accounts and how many reports it takes, it’s time to get to reporting the account.
To report an account,
- Open the Instagram App.
- Head to the profile of the account you wish to report.
- Click on the 3 dots on the top right corner.
- Select “Report”.
- Select “Report Account”
After this, you’ll get 3 options, “It’s posting content that shouldn’t be on Instagram”, “It’s pretending to be someone else” and “They may be under the age of 13”.
Option 1: “It’s posting content that shouldn’t be on Instagram”
Select this option and select the appropriate reason and click submit.
If multiple people are reporting an account, make sure all the reports have selected the same reason. Once reported by enough people, the account will be deleted within a couple days.
Option 2: “It’s pretending to be someone else”
If the account is pretending to be you or someone you know, select the second option.
After submitting the report, you’ll be asked to provide information like your name, photo and a government issued ID.
Once instagram confirms that the account is impersonating you, the account will be deleted.

Option 3: “They may be under the age of 13”
Only use this option if you’re 100% sure that the account holder is under the age of 13, the minimum age for signing up on Instagram.
